Roche AV specifies Harman Pro solution for £75m MMU business school

The new Manchester Metropolitan University Business School (MMU), which cost £75m to develop, features sound reinforcement and control from Harman Professional brands through its many newly-equipped lecture theatres and seminar rooms.

MMU Business School3

Surrounded by a stunning glass atrium, the three large lecture theatres on the ground floor (each holding 250) are complemented by three 120-seat smaller theatres, while higher up the seven-storey building further featured meeting rooms can be laid out in cabaret or theatre style — and are supported by smaller multiple glass meeting rooms of varying sizes and capacities.

Roche AV won the tender for the full audio-visual fit-out on the University’s All Saints campus, providing technical infrastructures to suit the various rooms’ requirements. The spec included six JBL CBT 70J column loudspeakers and four JBL Control 1’s, 14 Crown XTi 1002 DSP control amplifiers, six dbx 640M Digital Zone Processors and eight Soundcraft EPM-8 rackmount mixers — all supplied by Harman Professional’s UK and Eire distributors, Sound Technology Ltd. Having won a competitive bid, Roche AV’s Martin Clay was responsible for producing the technical specification (interfacing with some of the University’s own recommendations).

The three large lecture theatres and eight medium and small sized rooms are the main focus of the audio technology, while smaller rooms were simply fitted with projection screens

“This project was ideal since we were handed an empty building and were able to plug into the new cabling infrastructure,” he said.

Of his product choice, Martin Clay stated, “I had used dbx processing in the past, and with six inputs and four outputs it’s a flexible tool at exactly the right price point, with the matrix element that we really needed.” The device routes inputs from the various playback devices and mics to any output, including PA and induction loop system in the larger theatres.

The Roche AV technical director had also worked previously with the JBL CBT 70J, and is a big fan of the Constant Beamwidth design. “They look extremely modern,” he said. “We needed something with good quality output that would throw the sound across the large area of the group study room and this was ideal. Also there is an adjustment, enabling it to be tuned for music or voice — which is another benefit.”

Deployment of the various Harman Pro tools includes three large lecture theatres and three medium theatres, using Crown XTi 1002 amplification for playback audio and dbx ZonePro 640M for all audio processing; three MBA lecture theatres fitted with Crown XTi 1002 amplification for playback audio and Soundcraft EPM-8 8-channel multipurpose mixer for all audio processing; four small lecture theatres, fitted with a pair of JBL CBT 70J, Crown XTi 1002 amplification and Soundcraft EPM-8 for audio processing; four IT labs, each with a pair of JBL Control 1 Pro’s, and a group study room featuring a pair of JBL CBT 70J (either side of the projection screen) — along with a Crown XTi 1002 and Soundcraft EPM-8 for all audio processing.

The University itself had specified the Crown amplifiers and the Soundcraft EPM-8’s; these sit on a sliding tray at the bottom of each of the TeamMate AV racks. With their 60mm high-quality faders, the EPM’s are ideal — particularly for handling the induction loop requirements — while Martin Clay also praises the quality of the GB30 mic amp

The entire installation operates under Crestron master control, which was programmed by Clay and his co-programmer Paul Nicholson, while the day-to-day project management was under the direction of senior engineer, Craig Pickard.

HARMAN's JBL VTX Line Arrays at Emporium Music Festival

Netherlands-based production company Story Sound BV recently deployed its new HARMAN's JBL VTX line array system at the Emporium dance festival in the Dutch city of Nijmegen. The Festival, which this year drew 30,000 people (and 120 DJ's), embraces every genre of dance music from trance/progressive to hardstyle.

JBL Emporium

For the festival, Story Sound deployed almost 350 JBL loudspeakers, including 138 of the new VTX V25 full-range enclosures, powered by 190 Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers. This was the eighth edition of the popular event, which is held annually on the recreational area 'De Berendonck' just outside Nijmegen-and Story Sound has been there since the beginning.

Headlining on the largest stage was Sander van Doorn with 12 V25 loudspeakers per side, and a further six per side providing outfield coverage. The main stage also had two delay points, each containing six more VTX arrays, while the VIP section of the tribunes featured two further delay points, each containing six JBL VERTEC(r) VT4887A compact line array elements.

The stage sizes then reduced from area to area, with the smallest containing five V25 loudspeakers per side.

Taking into account three wind directions, Story Sound installed a wireless measuring device to monitor the sound levels (which were restricted to 85dBA at 100 meters), set 100 meters behind three of the stages. "Since VTX is highly focused and offers us more controllability we could produce a higher overall sound level for the audience," he explained.

Story Sound provided a sound technician to supervise each stage, with wireless laptop communication back to the central network control position in the production village, overseen on the HARMAN HiQnet(tm) platform by Story Sound's Barney Broomer. "We could listen to the measuring microphone on the same network while we also had a range of Soundcraft desks-Vi6, Vi4, Vi1, Si Compacts on the smaller stages-so we could control the input of the DJ and monitor feeds, as well as the MCs' microphones, using the dynamics of the desk," said Story.

Each DJ was provided with two JBL VRX932 loudspeakers per side as high-class reference monitoring so they were not mistaken in thinking that the lack of sound bleeding back onto the stage was an indicator that their levels were too low.

In summary, Story believed the event was a massive success. "JBL's Performance Manager(tm) is definitely an upgrade from System Architect, where we would have had to design so many custom panels [to achieve the same effect]. This has full input / output metering and thermal monitoring so that we could measure the temperature of the amps, side hangs and run a diagnostic," he said.

The network had been rock-solid throughout, he confirmed. "It was a very fast and the stability of the Crown amps was very good. All DJ's were extremely happy with the sound and the promoters were very happy-noting immediately the upgrade in sound quality."

JBL CBT Series Loudspeakers For High-Quality, Visually Discreet Monitor Use on Survivor and Celebrity Apprentice

Looking to provide contestants with professional-quality monitor coverage while maintaining a low visual profile on the sets of CBS' Survivor and NBC's Celebrity Apprentice reality television programs, Red Hook, New York-based Firehouse Productions relies on HARMAN's JBL CBT Series column speakers.

NewImage

Both television programs needed a loudspeaker option that could provide tight vertical coverage patterns while being easily hidden amongst the design of their sets. To do so, Firehouse Productions provided JBL's CBT 50LA-a compact, 50-centimeter-high column that utilizes a straight line of eight 2-inch drivers.

Dan Gerhard, mixer for both shows, stated, "The CBT 50LA is perfect for a set where unobtrusive monitoring of dialogue is required." Gerhard was able to keep the speakers visually unobtrusive on both sets by attaching them to the palm trees on the set of Survivor, and attaching them to a vertical window frame on Celebrity Apprentice. At just three inches wide by 21 inches high, they provided the perfect low-profile solution with plenty of power.

"The tightly controlled pattern is ideal in reducing unwanted reflections from nearby scenery, but also throws intelligibility for some distance," Gerhard added. "By placing the columns at head level, the speakers project the high-quality sound that we were looking for."

"Other solutions do not have the pattern control that the CBT's do," said Mark Dittmar, Lead Design and Integration Engineer at Firehouse Productions. "They also help with feedback and eliminate any problems we've had in the past. It really is a spectacular solution and a unique way to use the CBT's."

Being used even with a lapel microphone, "there is concise phase coherence at low levels, making them perfect for television studio purposes," Gerhard added.

"It's great that the CBT's can be used for this application and really shows their versatility and ability to provide direct, accurate and high-quality sound," Dittmar added.
